Recreation along the Root River State Trail in Lanesboro
The Root River State Trail officially opened in 1986, after restoration of a formerly abandoned railroad line. The trail itself is 42 miles long, and starts in the town of Fountain. From there, it passes through the communities of Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston. This incredible trail system also connects to the Harmony-Preston Valley state bike trail system, which offers another 18 miles of paved trail to explore. You don’t have to hit the pavement to enjoy the Root River Valley, though. You can also paddle down the river alongside the trail, taking in the views from an entirely different vantage point. However you choose to travel the trail, it’s easy to plan an entire vacation around the Root River State Trail, which offers an extensive list of attractions, recreational opportunities, restaurants, and shops and other activities to enjoy in each town along the way.
Beyond enjoying views of the soaring limestone bluffs common to this area, visitors will also enjoy a variety of wildlife on the Root River State Trail. Common sightings include wild turkey, deer, hawks, turkey vultures, and even rattlesnakes, who can sometimes be seen sunning themselves on rocky outcroppings and along the river bottoms. You’ll also be riding by a number of historic buildings and rural communities, which add to the delightful experience of biking, walking, or paddling through this region. The trail towns nestled along the Root River State Trail, such as Lanesboro, are great places to stop, whether for a meal or an entire day or more.
