The Root River State Trail officially opened in 1986, after restoration of a formerly abandoned railroad line. The trail itself is 42 miles long, and starts in the town of Fountain. From there, it passes through the communities of Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston. This incredible trail system also connects to the Harmony-Preston Valley state bike trail system, which offers another 18 miles of paved trail to explore.
